The Portuguese character Ã/ã represents a nasal A (IPA: /ɐ̃/). It is also used in the Kashubian and Vietnamese languages.
Because it is a typical Portuguese sound, it is sometimes used as a symbol of the Portuguese language.
Portuguese has five nasal vowels:
- [ɐ̃] (ã, an, am)
- [ẽ] (en, em)
- [ĩ] (in, im)
- [õ] (õ, on, om)
- [ũ] (un, um)
As well as five nasal diphthongs:
- [ɐ̃ĩ̯] (ãe)
- [ɐ̃ũ̯] (ão, -am)
- [ẽĩ̯] (-em, -en-)
- [õĩ̯] (õe)
- [ũĩ̯] (ui)
