Šolta is an island in Croatian part of Adriatic Sea. It is situated in middle-Dalmatian archipelago, west from island Brač (separated by Strait of Split), south from Split (separated by Split channel) and east of Drvenik islands (separated by Šolta channel)<ref name="kroatien-online">Šolta on Kroatien-online.com</ref>. It's area is 58.98 km², and it has population of 1,479 (as of 2001).<ref name="yearbook">Statistical yearbook for 2006 of Central bureau of statistics of Republic of Croatia</ref> The highest peak of Šolta is summit Vela Straža<ref name="JLZ 8">General Encyclopedia of Yugoslavian Lexicographic Institute, volume 8 (Zagreb, 1982), article Šolta.</ref> which is 238 metres high<ref name="yearbook" />. On north-eastern coast of the island there are large bays Rogač and Nečujam. In western part of interior of Šolta there is a field approximately 6km long and 2 km wide. Economy of the island is based on vineyards, olives, fruit, fishing and tourism.<ref name="JLZ 8" /><ref name="kroatien-online" /> While main settlements (Grohote, Gornje Selo, Srednje Selo, Donje Selo) are inland, main fishing centre is Maslinica<ref name="JLZ 8" />, which is exposed only to north-westerly winds thus being a good shelter for smaller boats<ref name="kroatien-online" />.
