1-1-9
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
1-1-9 is the emergency phone number in parts of Asia.
[edit] 119 in Japan
In Japan one can call this emergency number from a payphone for free. If it is an older phone, one can press the red emergency button. If it is a newer phone, one can simply enter the number, and the caller will not be charged. The operator will want to know if the caller needs an ambulance (the caller should respond "kyu kyu desu") or a firetruck (the caller can respond with "kaji desu"). The caller should not hangup because the operator needs his or her address and directions to the emergency. If the caller cannot do this in Japanese, operators in most major cities can now use special equipment to trace the location of most land based phone calls if they are given enough time. (The operator may have a hard time tracing the phone if the caller is using a mobile phone.) English speaking operators should be available in the Tokyo area. The police has a separate number: 110.
[edit] 119 in South Korea
A caller's location is automatically traced when he or she calls, and operators who can speak English, Japanese and Chinese should be available.
[edit] 119 in China
119 is recognized in China (both People's Republic of China and Republic of China) as the standard emergency telephone number for firefighters.
