- The United States curtails professional baseball September 2 in order to accelerate mobilization for war
- World Series - Boston Red Sox defeat Chicago Cubs, 4 games to 2; Boston will not repeat for 86 years, until 2004. Chicago uses three lefty pitchers in rotation so Boston lefty batter Babe Ruth is benched during the four games he does not pitch himself; Ruth pitches brilliantly and George Whiteman stars as a full-time outfielder.
- Babe Ruth leads the American League in home runs for the first time, hitting 11

- January 2 - The Montreal Wanderers' arena burns down leading to the team's disbandment.
- March 30 - The Toronto Arenas defeat the Vancouver Millionaires to win the Stanley Cup. It is the first time the trophy is awarded by the newly formed National Hockey League.
