1926 World Series

In the 1926 World Series, the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Yankees in seven games. It was the first championship for the Cardinals, who lead all National League franchises with 10 World Series titles. It was also the third World Series loss in four tries for Babe Ruth's Yankees, although they would rebound to win the Series in 1927 and 1928.

Grover Cleveland Alexander, pitching on short rest, came out of the bullpen to strike out Tony Lazzeri with the bases loaded in Game 7 and lead the Cardinals to victory, and upsetting the powerful New York Yankees Murderers' Row lineup. Social historians point out the irony of that matchup, as both men suffered secretly from epilepsy. The series features a three-home run game by Ruth in Game 4, a World Series record only equalled twice: by Ruth again in 1928, and by Reggie Jackson in 1977.

The series featured possibly the strangest ending ever in World Series play. The Yankees entered the bottom of the 9th inning trailing 3-2. Ruth walked with two outs--his fourth walk of the day--to put the tying run on base. Bob Meusel came to bat next, but Ruth, who had a career 50% success rate stealing bases, chose to try to steal 2nd. He was thrown out by catcher Bob O'Farrell's throw to Rogers Hornsby, ending the Series.

Managers: Rogers Hornsby (St. Louis), Miller Huggins (New York)

[edit] Trivia

  • Babe Ruth would become the first player to ever hit three home runs in a single Series game. Two years later he would tie his own record and it would take nearly fifty years before another player would duplicate this feat.
  • It helped that St. Louis would win Game 7 and clinch the World Championship by walking Babe Ruth a World Series record four times.
