The 2000 World Series (a "Subway Series") featured a crosstown matchup between the two-time defending champion New York Yankees and the New York Mets, with the Yankees winning 4 games to 1 for their third straight championship and 26th overall. It marks, to date, the last World Series won by the Yankees, and the last series with repeat champions. It was the first Subway Series since 1956.

[edit] Miscellaneaous

  • This was the first Subway Series since 1956 and the only one since the Dodgers and Giants moved to California.
  • The 1998-2000 New York Yankees establish a record of ten consecutive games won in consecutive World Series. The previous record was nine by the 1937-1939 Yankees. Overall, the Yankees had won fourteen straight World Series games (starting with Game 3 of the 1996 World Series) breaking the mark of twelve straight by the 1927,1928 and 1932 Yankees.
  • The Yankees' Game 2 win eclipsed the longest AL winning streak in the World Series at 11 games (the AL had previously won 10 straight from 1927-29 and again from 1937-1940)
  • The Yankees were the first team to "three-peat" as champions since the 1972-1974 Oakland Athletics.
  • The Yankees were the first franchise to appear in three straight World Series since the 1988-1990 Oakland Athletics.
  • Starting with this Series, MLB started changing the World Series logo each year. Prior to this, logos were not changed year after year. The 1998 and 1999 series had one logo, the series from 1992 through 1997 had another logo, and the series from 1987 through 1991 had another.
  • The New York Mets won game 3 of the 2000 World series by a score of 4-2, their only victory in a World Series game since game 7 of the 1986 World Series.
  • Yankee hurler Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez earned the loss in Game 3, snapping his undefeated postseason record (6-0).
  • New York Mets relief pitcher John Franco earned his only World Series victory of his career in game 3.
  • This was Mike Piazza's first appearance in a World Series.
  • The World Series winning RBI was driven in by Yankees utility man and fan favorite Luis Sojo.
  • The day of the 2000 World Series opener (October 21, 2000), marked 2 Anniversaries. (1) 25 years ago to this date Boston Red Sox's catcher Carlton Fisk ends game 6 of the 1975 World Series with his famous homerun off the left field foul pole in Fenway Park in Boston to beat the Cincinnati Reds and force a Game 7. (2) 20 years ago to this date the Philadelphia Phillies won their only World Series title, defeating the Kansas City Royals in 6 Games.
  • Mets Left Fielder Benny Agbayani becomes the first Hawaiian born player to play in the World Series since another Mets' player Sid Fernandez played in 1986.
