2002 Austrian Grand Prix
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 2002 Austrian Grand Prix was a Formula One race held on May 12, 2002 at the A1-Ring. It was infamous for the "staged finish", where Rubens Barrichello was told to let Michael Schumacher past at the last curve, due to team orders . Ferrari wanted their number one driver Schumacher to win the race and collect the maximum points for the Drivers' Championship. This extremely angered the crowd and people worldwide. Sensing the anger within the crowd, Schumacher pushed Barrichello onto the top step of the podium, incurring a $1 mil. dollar fine. Team orders were banned soon after this happened again that September at the United States Grand Prix (in which Schumacher returned the favor), on the grounds it artificially determined the race.
The race also featured a huge accident between Takuma Sato and Nick Heidfeld - Heidfeld lost control over his car, spun round and crashed into Sato's side. Sato suffered minor injuries but got stuck in the wreckage and it took several minutes for the race track stewards to cut him out from the vehicle.
