- 8 January - 8TV, Malaysia's fifth free-to-air commercial television station was launched, replacing MetroVision which ceased transmissions in 2000
- 2 February - Kailan Hassan the mother of fifth Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi dies.
- 21 March - The 2004 Malaysian General Elections. Barisan Nasional party retaken Terengganu.
- 26 December - The 2004 Asian Tsunami killing about 130,000 people including more than 40 Malaysians. In Malaysia, the Tsunami could be felt in Langkawi and Penang.
