2006 FIFA World Cup qualification (play-off CONMEBOL-OFC)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Football World Cup 2006 - Oceania - South America Qualification Playoff was a home and away playoff between the following teams:
- The winners of the Oceania qualifying tournament, Australia
- The fifth placed team from the South American qualifying tournament, Uruguay.
This pairing was the same as the pairing for the 2002 OFC-CONMEBOL playoff, which Uruguay won 3-1 on aggregate. The draw for determining the order of the home and away legs was made at a FIFA congress on September 10, 2005.
The tie was drawn 1-1 on aggregate after 180 minutes and also after extra time. With both teams failing to score an away goal the playoff was decided by a penalty shootout, with Australia shooting first.
The winner, Australia, earned a place in the 2006 World Cup, the first time a team had qualified for the final tournament on a penalty shoot-out.
