[edit] Potential bids
[edit] Busan, South Korea
Busan, South Korea. With the success of 2002 Asian Games, Busan's Mayor announced on November 14 2005 to the Korean news agency Yonhap that they were planning to bid for the games. But the official bit was only made in a new conference during the 17th APEC forum held on November 18 and 19 in Busan. [1]
[edit] Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town, South Africa, which was eliminated during the third round of the 2004 Olympic race, may also bid for the 2020 Olympics. <ref>[2]</ref> It is widely perceived that the IOC wants to give the Games to an African nation, [citation needed] but could not do so because of infrastructural deficiencies. This is supported by a comment made by IOC President Rogge concerning the Cape Town bid for the 2004 Olympics (which went to Athens, Greece). [citation needed] Rogge said that he wanted to give the games to Cape Town, and told them to keep trying. [citation needed]
[edit] Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen is considering to bid for their first Olympics in 2020. In a report by Rambøll Consulting it is said that Copenhagen will try to bid for the Olympics in 2020 because they conclude it’s the most likely year that a European country will win the bid. [citation needed] Copenhagen already has excellent infrastructure, so only little upgrades would be necessary. [citation needed]
Denmark has created a group whose purpose is to attract big events to Denmark, which would increase the possibility to get the Olympics. Denmark may be attempting to hold the World Championship in table tennis in 2010, World Cycling Championship in 2011, European Football Championship (together with Sweden) in 2016 and European Championships in Athletics in 2018. [3]
[edit] Geneva-Lyon, Switzerland-France
In January 2006, a work group named Lyon Nouvel Horizon, backed by French transport minister Dominique Perben suggested the idea of a common, bi-national Lyon-Geneva bid. There have already been bi-national bids in the past, even though the IOC has never awarded the games to a joint bid of two cities.
[edit] Minneapolis, United States
Main Article: Minneapolis 2020 Olympic bid
Minneapolis has been talking about bidding for the 2020 Olympic Games[citation needed]. The city's lakes and location on the Mississippi River have made excellent choices for water sports. Transportation would be easy because I-94 and I-35 run to the city and the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is a local hub and easily accessible. The city's northern location can also offer a milder summer than more southernly regions. With the building of two new stadiums, one for the University of Minnesota (TCF Bank Stadium), as well as a new downtown stadium for the Minnesota Vikings, Minneapolis's chances have increased for getting the 2020 games. Some have also stated that St. Cloud would be integrated as a part of the plan, citing St. Cloud State University's facilities as being above par.
[edit] Philadelphia, United States
There is also speculation that Philadelphia is interested in bidding for the 2020 games. Joe Torsella, head of Philadelphia Sports Congress has pointed at a potential bid, if the bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics fell through, which it did. Torsella confirmed his 'going for the gold' in an interview in the local Philadelphia Daily News. [4]
[edit] Prague, Czech Republic
Prague', Czech Republic. Prague’s mayor Pavel Bém has organized a team to assess whether Prague could win a bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Its estimated cost for preparations for an Olympic bid, including a proposal to connect the metro system to sports centres and to an enlarge an airport, would be USD$9.1 billion. Also, most of the sport grounds must be built. Some parts of the Olympics will not be in Prague (like Yachting); the Olympics would, if success inflow the whole country. [5]. [6].
[edit] Bidding considerations
A lot depends on where the 2016 Games end up being held. It is believed that the Games will return to the USA due to an unwritten convention that every 20 years the IOC reciprocate for the vast payments by the NBC media group for Olympic coverage [citation needed]- funds that largely bankroll the IOC. If the United States (or Canada; Toronto was second to Beijing in the 2008 bidding and may consider a run at 2016 with the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, British Columbia long out of the way alongside Montreal) were to win the 2016 Games, there is a very good chance that the 2020 Games could go to an African or South American city, two regions that have never hosted a Summer Olympics. However, if either region actually hosts the 2016 Games, the 2020 Games will probably end up in either North America or Asia.
