- Aulus Atilius Calatinus is appointed dictator and becomes the first dictator to lead an army outside Italy when he goes to Sicily.

- Battle of Drepana - Carthaginians under Ad Herbal defeat the fleet of Roman admiral Publius Claudius Pulcher, who had thrown the sacred chickens overboard to "let them drink" after the chickens refused to eat.
