amNewYork is a daily free morning newspaper published in New York City by Tribune Company, which also publishes Newsday. According to the publisher, average daily distribution as of summer 2005 was 311,500. When it launched in October 2003, amNewYork was the first newspaper of its kind in New York. Its main competitor is now New York Metro, which followed amNewYork into the market, using many of the same distribution and marketing strategies. The paper is distributed in two ways; The first being by workers ("hawkers," who sport red amNewYork vests) paid to distribute the paper near NYC transportation points; The second being distributed in enclosed newspaper holders ("honor boxes") located on sidewalks and street corners near areas of high pedestrian traffic.
amNewYork is teaming up with Nokia and Wi-Fi Salon to provide New Yorkers with free wireless news and entertainment information in 10 of the city's parks starting beginning in Summer 2006.
"As one of the most innovative newspaper and media companies in the city, it makes sense for us to be a part of this groundbreaking effort and join with Nokia, as well as the Parks Department and Wi-Fi Salon, to bring these multimedia services to New Yorkers," said Floyd Weintraub, senior vice president for business development and external relations, amNewYork.
