Aaliyah is the self-titled third and final studio album by American R&B singer Aaliyah, released by Blackground and Virgin Records on July 17, 2001 (see 2001 in music). Primarily produced by Timbaland, the album debuted in the top five of the U.S. Billboard 200, but quickly jumped to number one following her death from a plane crash in August 2001. The album went on to go double platinum.

Aaliyah was hailed as the singer's most mature project. Nearly all of its tracks were written by Steve "Static" Garrett, with Missy Elliott contributing the album's fourth single, "I Care 4 U". Written and demoed by Elliott and Timbaland for One in a Million, Aaliyah did not record the song for that album (it was determined that there was no room for it), and instead recorded the song for this album. The album was also nominated at the Grammy's for Best R&B Album but lost to Alicia Keys and was Nominated for Album of the year as well.

[edit] Song Description

Tracks 1 - 5 The album starts with "We Need A Resolution", featuring Timbaland, which asks "Who should be hurt and who should blamed" in the relationship in the single. The second track , "Loose Rap" featuring Static is about how people criticize Aaliyah and her crew with lies. The fourth and fifth tracks "Rock The Boat" and "More Than A Woman" describe a relationship being to next level.

Tracks 6 - 9 "Never No More", the sixth track, is a R&B ballad where Aaliyah shows zero-tolerance and fear for an abusive relationship. The seventh track, "I Care 4 U", is another ballad that provides consolation to a lonely man. "Extra Smooth" rejects a man trying to be "extra smooth". Putting the clues together when a man is showing signs of having an affair is suggested in the salsa-influenced song "Read Between the Lines". The ninth track entitled "U Got Nerve" is based on nu-metal expresses dissatifaction with a lying man.

Tracks 12 - 14 Track number 12, "I Can Be", pushes towards nu-metal even more than "U Got Nerve" tells Aaliyah's lover she can be just as good as his previous love. "Those Were the Days" reminensces on the beauty of a now broken relationship. The final and darkest track, "What If", is another nu-metal based song asking what if Aaliyah was as deceitful as her man. "What If" takes it far enough to even threaten murder.
