Abbotskerswell
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Abbotskerswell is a village in the English county of Devon. It's located 7 miles from the seaside resort of Torquay and 32 miles from the city of Plymouth.
In the Domesday Book it was called Carsuella and had a population of less than one hundred. By the year 2001 the population had risen to 1473.
The village sports two pubs (as well as a small shop, hair salon and Post Office), the Court Farm Inn was previously a farm, and was converted in the 20th century with the closure of the old Tradesmans Arms. The other pub is the older Butchers Arms, which ironically was originally a blacksmith.
The village has the Church of St. Mary, which was affected by the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the reign of Henry VIII. Since then, old treasures have been found within the church, and work has been undertaken to restore them somewhat.
Abbotskerswell developed around the growing of apples for cider making.
Abbotskerswell is one of the few villages that has managed to resist expansion too much. There are massive limitations on new housing developments, as of the 'village envelope' created by the council.
