Akari Unryu (雲竜 あかり Unryu Akari) is an important supporting character in Rumiko Takahashi's manga series Ranma ½.

[edit] Background
Akari Unryuu comes from a long line of trainers who raise and train pigs for sumo-type fighting. Akari loves pigs, and their potential strength as warriors. A favorite of hers turned out to be one of the best "sumo-pigs" in the country - Katsunishiki. It was even said by her grandfather that only a man who could defeat Katsunishiki in battle was worthy of becoming Akari's husband.

One day Ryoga happened to defeat Katsunishiki in battle, and of course, when Akari witnessed this, she quickly fell in love with him, of course claiming that she has loved Ryoga since before he defeated Katsunishiki and even showing Ryoga her diary to prove it (but Ranma is quick to notice that all the pages containing Ryoga are only a few minutes old). This love gets even stronger when Akari finds out that Ryoga can turn into a little black pig; this makes Akari see Ryoga as the perfect match for her. Thus, Akari pursues Ryoga, who isn't really sure who he loves for real - Akane or Akari.

Akari is head over heels in love with Ryoga. So much so that she even tries to learn to hate pigs for him. She is unsuccessful at breaking her joy of pigs, and feels unworthy of Ryoga, but once she discovers that he himself is actually a pig, she dances with joy that she has found the perfect man.

Akari seems to be a very sweet girl. She is of course, very determined, and is trying to get Ryoga as a husband. Patient and kind, she loves Ryoga despite knowing about his curse, and is very understanding of Ryoga's stumbling in the ways of the heart.
[edit] Katsunishiki
Her pig, Katsunishiki is the 14th yokozuna (grand champion) and is rampaging through Nerima when he encounters Ryoga. Due to a promise made with her father, Akari can only marry someone who defeats Katsunishiki, and so she becomes instantly infatuated with Ryoga, who makes short work of her pet pig. Katsunishiki, raised from a suckling into a champion by the girl, now returns the favor by acting as her protector. He is also Akari's primary mode of transportation, carrying her on his back.

- Akari means "light or glimmer". Unryu means "cloud dragon" and more specifically is a sumo wrestling style involving both offense and defense.
- There is an anime-only character named Anna, a cute teenager who lives in a farm near a western-style town. Ryoga saves her from a gang of bikers and stays at her farm for a while. Eventually, Anna falls in love with Ryoga and when he goes away, she promises to wait for his return. Anna and Akari are similar in looks and personality: Anna even rides around on the back of a huge bull she refers to as Gertie. They were last seen in a huge crowd in the OVA episode "Tendo Family Christmas Scramble." It can be said that Akari is based on Anna since Anna made her debut nearly 18 months before Akari appeared in the manga, of course this is just speculation.
