An aksjeselskap is the Norwegian term for a stock-based corporation. It is usually abbreviated AS or A/S, especially when used in company names. When a company trades in public stock, ie. is registered on a stock market, the designation ASA for allmennaksjeselskap is used. This is different from an ANS or a DA, two forms of ansvarlig selskap, in which the owner or owners are personally responsible for the economic situation of the company, and, upon a bankruptcy, would have to carry all outstanding debts alone.
