Albuquerque International Sunport (IATA: ABQ, ICAO: KABQ) is a public airport located three miles (5 km) southeast of the central business district (CBD) of Albuquerque, a city in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, USA. The airport's IATA airport code ABQ is also Amtrak's 3-letter code for its rail station.
The airport shares its runways with Kirtland Air Force Base of the United States Air Force. It is not unusual to see military aircraft taking off within close sight of the terminal.
ABQ's terminal, which was expanded to its present size in the late 1980s and again in 1996, encompasses 574,000 sq. ft. of space and has 23 gates in two concourses.
The airport has one passenger terminal that is designed in the Spanish-Pueblo style of architecture which houses 2 concourses and an area for commuter airline gates. Albuquerque International Sunport handled 6,471,205 passengers in 2005. - On February 19, 1955, TWA Flight 260, a Martin 4-0-4, crashed into the Sandia Mountains shortly after takeoff. All 16 people on board the flight perished.
- On November 3, 1973, National Airlines Flight 27, a McDonnell Douglas DC-10, suffered a catastrophic engine failure while in-flight. Shrapnel from the engine struck the fuselage and caused an explosive decompression of the aircraft. One person was sucked out of the cabin. The plane was able to make an emergency landing at ABQ.
