Aledo is a city in Mercer County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,613 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Mercer CountyGR6. It is the home town of country music singer Suzy Bogguss. The High School Mascot is the Aledo Green Dragons. School colors are Forest Green and White. The Class of 2006 had 71 students. A band shell was recently added to downtown Aledo. Aledo celebrated its sesquicentennial (150 years) in September 2005.

Aledo is located at 41°12′1″N, 90°44′60″W (41.200172, -90.749956)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.8 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.44% is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 3,613 people, 1,506 households, and 1,016 families residing in the city. The population density was 622.8/km² (1,611.2/mi²). There were 1,588 housing units at an average density of 273.7/km² (708.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.34% White, 0.44% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.19% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.72% of the population.

There were 1,506 households out of which 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.5% were non-families. 29.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.87.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 86.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $33,449, and the median income for a family was $41,934. Males had a median income of $35,233 versus $21,271 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,498. About 7.1% of families and 8.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.5% of those under age 18 and 9.8% of those age 65 or over.
