Alistair Appleton

Alistair Appleton (born 1970) is an English television presenter.

Born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, to Peter and Sally, Appleton gained ten O-levels and three A-levels at St. John's Catholic School. In 1988 went to Gonville & Caius College at the University of Cambridge where he studied for a degree in English Literature. Whilst at university, Appleton sang in the chapel choir, rowed for his college team, and acted in several productions.
On graduating with a 2.1, Appleton left for Poland, where he taught at the University of Gdansk. He later taught English in East Germany and worked as a translator and journalist for Deutsche Welle TV. Appleton broke into television as a translator and journalist of Deutsche Welle and eventually became the front man of Deutsche Welle's youth current affairs show, Heat.
He returned to the UK where he has scored roles on Sky's Hot TV, Five's House Doctor, BBC Two's Rhona, the Travel Channel's Travel On, BBC One's Garden Invaders, Cash in the Attic, and BBC Food's Stately Suppers. He has also hosted several television specials, including The Proms.
Appleton is also doing some acting, including a role in Footballers' Wives, and an appearance in Doctor Who in the episode "Army of Ghosts", where he played himself and was (presumably) killed by a Cyberman, although only the Cyberman clamping onto his shoulder was shown onscreen.

Appleton is gay, and came out at university. But in an article in Gay Times, he admits he only fully accepted his sexuality when he lived in Poland and Germany.
In 2000 he converted to Buddhism, and teaches yoga and meditation
