[edit] History

The airline was established and started operations in early August 2002 when Brisbane-based Queensland Airline Holdings (made up of Steve Padgett from Aeromil, Airwork's Hugh Jones and Lloyd Helicopters' Stephen Bond) acquired the assets of the dormant Flight West Airlines, which had been established on 25 May 1987 and was liquidated in 2000. They called the new airline Alliance Airlines to reflect their philosophy of working closely with the travel industry and their aviation partners.

Alliance had wet leasing contracts with Norfolk Jet Express, until that airline was liquidated on 4 June 2005. For the first week after liquidation, Alliance were used for services, but it was planned that Qantas would operate the flights from 11 June using Air Nauru aircraft. Alliance currently holds wet-leasing contracts with Air Niugini for Papua New Guinea and North Queensland services. Alliance Airlines is wholly owned by the Queensland Airline Holdings consortium.

[edit] Services

Charter flights are operated primarily for the resources sector. Alliance Airlines currently flies from Townsville to Phosphate Hill Mine (Incitec Pivot - Southern Cross Operations), Century Mine (Zinifex Limited), Telfer Mine (Newcrest), Gove (Alcan), Cloncurry (Xstrata) and Cannington (BHP Billiton). From November 2006, Alliance Airlines will operate charter services from Perth to Mount Keith (BHP Billiton) and Leinster (BHP Billiton). Charter services also extend from Brisbane to Canberra and the Australian Defence Forces use Alliance for charter flights to East Timor and the Solomon Islands.

Since mid-2005 Alliance has suspended its scheduled passenger services, instead focusing further on its charter activities.

Alliance has previously served the following airports in RPT roles:
