Altai Krai

Altai Krai (Russian: Алта́йский край) is a federal subject of Russia (a krai) in the Siberian Federal District. It borders with, clockwise from the south, Kazakhstan, Novosibirsk and Kemerovo Oblasts and the Altai Republic. The krai's administrative center is the city of Barnaul. The territory is a member of the West Siberia economic district.

The region has an area of 169,100 km² and a population of around 2.6 million (census 2002). With over 600,000 inhabitants, Barnaul is the largest city of the territory.

The region's governor Mikhail Yevdokimov was killed in a car crash on August 7, 2005.

The region's economy depends on agriculture and granted by the Russian government.

As of 2002 All-Russian Population Census, Russians make the majority with 92%. Germans are the second - about 3% (see Mennonite settlements of Altai). The area is also populated by 2% Ukrainians, 0.4% Kazakhs, 0.35% Tatars, 0.32% Belarusians, 0.31% Armenians and by people of some other nationalities. There are 60 districts and 12 cities.

The Russian Altai region has rolling foothills, grasslands, lakes,rivers, and mountains.<ref>Russian program - Altai. Retrieved on 2006-11-30.</ref> The climate is severe with long cold dry winters and hot, usually dry summers. The regions main waterway is the Ob River. The Biya River, Katun River, and Chuya River are also important. The biggest lakes are Lake Kulundinskoe, Lake Kuchukskoe, and Lake Mikhailovskoe.<ref name="altai">Altai Territory. Retrieved on 2006-11-29.</ref> Altai Krai has huge reserves of raw materials, especial materials used for building, as well as significant mineral reserves. These include nonferrous metals, lead and iron ores, manganese, tungsten, molybdenum, bauxite, and gold. Forests cover about 6 million hectares of the territory's land.<ref name="altai"/>

Retrieved on 2006-11-30.</ref> Nomadic tribes crossed through the territory during periods of migration. The nomadic tribes were composed of different peoples.
