The alto cornett was usual built a tone lower than the regular treble cornett and alto cornetts featured a slightly wider bore. Sometimes alto cornetts featured a single key to secure the lowest note. Alto cornetts were useful in consort music for cornetts and sackbuts.
A few composers specifically scored the alto cornett in their compositions Giovanni Paolo Colonna suggested the employment of two alto cornetts in his Salmi à 8 voci, op.1, published in Bologna in 1681.
A number of modern cornett makers produce alto cornetts and these instruments may be heard on several recordings.
