[edit] History
Before 1945, Andheri was administered by a Collector in charge of the "Suburban District". With the creation of Greater Bombay in 1945, the administration was merged with the rest of Mumbai city. Andheri has a population exceeding four million, and as per record is by far the most populous suburb of Mumbai.
One of the oldest residential areas in Andheri is Dhake Colony on Versova Road, Andheri West. The five buildings in the area were built around 1950, and they served as a landmark until recently. The area is now known as D.N. Nagar.
Contributing to Andheri's history is a popular Ganesha temple, Shree Vanchasiddhi Vinayak Ganesh Mandir, created in 1926.
Andheri (West) connects to an island, the Versova gaon, also known as Fishing village. This connection wad made in the 1950s by constructing a single lane road surrounded by sea water. The area around this road was later filled to develop areas now known as D.N. Nagar, Four Bungalows, Seven Bungalows, and Dhake Colony among others. Today, Andheri (West) is largely a residential area, whereas Andheri (East) is both a commercial and a residential area, including SEEPZ (Santacruz Electronic and Export Promotion Zone), Seepz++, Saki Naka (an industrial area), etc.
