Applied Materials, Inc. NASDAQ: AMAT (SEHK: 4336) is the world's largest supplier of products and services to the semiconductor industry. The company is headquartered in Santa Clara, California in the Silicon Valley. Founded in 1967 by Michael A. McNeilly and others, Applied Materials went public in 1972.
Applied Materials manufactures systems that perform most of the primary steps in the chip fabrication process, including atomic layer deposition, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), physical vapor deposition (PVD), electrochemical plating (EP), etching, ion implantation, rapid thermal processing, chemical mechanical polishing, metrology and wafer inspection.The company spends approximately $1B each year on research and development. These activities generate many technologies that also potentially have applications beyond the domains for which they were developed and Applied Materials seeks prospective licensees for win-win collaborative deals in such areas.
Applied has three subsidiaries: AKT, Inc., Etec Systems, Inc. and Metron Technology, Inc.
On July 7th, 2006 Applied Materials,Inc. has completed its acquisition of Applied Films Corp., a producer of equipment used in manufacturing flat panel displays and solar cells.
On November 6th 2006, Applied Materials, Inc. announced the purchase of Brooks Software, a division of Brooks Automation Inc. subject to approval.
