[edit] History

Founded in 1909 as Arenas Football Club, they became Club Arenas in 1912. In 1914 the club played a series of three friendlies against FC Barcelona and won all three. They subsequently competed in the Campeonato Norte along with Real Sociedad, Athletic Bilbao, Racing Santander, Sporting de Gijón and Celta Vigo. In 1917 they won this competition and qualified for the Copa del Rey. They reached the final in Barcelona where they lost 2-1 to Madrid FC after extra time. In 1919 they won another regional competition, the Campeonato de Vizcaya, and qualified for the Copa del Rey again. This time they won it, beating FC Barcelona 5-2 in extra time. In 1920 when Spain made their international debut at the Olympic Games, the squad included two Arenas’ players, Pagazaurtundua and Félix Sesúmaga. The club made two more appearances in Copa del Rey finals. In 1925 they lost 2-0 to FC Barcelona and in 1927 they lost 1-0 to Real Unión in the only all-Basque final to date. In 1930 the club finished third in La Liga. However they only remained in the Primera Division for seven seasons and were relegated in 1935.
