Arrondissements of the Orne département

In France, the chief town of an arrondissement is known as the sous-préfecture. When an arrondissement contains the préfecture (capital) of the département, that préfecture is the capital of the arrondissement, acting both as a préfecture and as a sous-préfecture. The Orne département of France has 3 arrondissements. These are:

  1. Arrondissement of Alençon, (préfecture of the Orne département: Alençon) with 11 cantons and 133 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 101,492 in 1990, and was 101,487 in 1999, a decrease of 0.0%.
  2. Arrondissement of Argentan, (sous-préfecture: Argentan) with 17 cantons and 226 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 120,743 in 1990, and was 119,446 in 1999, a decrease of 1.07%.
  3. Arrondissement of Mortagne-au-Perche, (sous-préfecture: Mortagne-au-Perche) with 12 cantons and 146 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 70,969 in 1990, and was 71,404 in 1999, an increase of 0.61%.fr:Arrondissements de l'Orne
