The Ash Borer (Podosesia syringae), aka Lilac Borer, is a clearwing moth in the family Sesiidae. It is found throughout the United States east of the Rocky Mountains.
With its black and yellow bands, prominent antenna and hind legs, and overall body shape, the Ash Borer is a Batesian mimic of the common wasp (Vespula vulgaris). It is somewhat larger than the wasp, growing to a length of ¾ to 1½ inches (2–4 cm), and is amber-colored in addition to black and yellow.
Ash Borers feed on European Ash (Fraxinus excelsior), lilac, privet and mountain ash.
