Askim, Sweden
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Askim is a stadsdel of the municipality of Göteborg in Sweden, about 10 km south of the city centre. To the northwest of Askim lies Västra Frölunda, and to the east Mölndal. Askim also lies neighbour to the sea at the west.
As a stadsdel (city section), Askim has a local council composed of the same proportions ruling Göteborg as a whole. The voting base in Askim is predominantly bourgeoise, while Gothenburg as a whole has a social-democratic, socialist and environmentalist majority. This has caused some local tensions, and a strong local movement works to once again make Askim a separate municipality. Due to the entire city voting on this, the poorer stadsdelar vote Askims demands down.
Askim was tradtionally inhabited by fishermen. It is now a predominantly upper-middle class area with golf clubs, yacht clubs, and large houses. The less expensive areas are popular with families with children due to a reputation for safety and good schools.
Askim is divided into smaller parts, for example Askim, Hovås, and Skintebo. Beneath Askim lies many historical artifacts dating back to the Stone Age. Many worked pieces of rock show evidence of these times.
