Bandurist

A person who plays the Ukrainian folk instrument known as a bandura.

There are a number of different types of bandurist who differ in their choice of instrument, the repertoire they play and manner in which they approach their vocation.

  1. Kobzari - Playing on authentic ethnographic instruments or copies. This group can also be further catagorised into Authentic, Reproductive and Stage performers.
  2. Academic - playing contemporary more sophisticated concert banduras. These performers have a tertiary education majoring in Bandura performance and differ from the other catagories by the inclusion of transcriptions of works by Western Classical composers rather than Ukrainian folk music. This catagory can be further divided into instrumentalists (who only perform instrumental works) and vocalists (who primarilly use the bandura to accompany their voice. The most common academic bandurists play in the Kyiv style. There are a number of Kharkiv style academic bandurists.
  3. 'Fakeloric''Fakeloric' performers - who play stylised songs and repertoire on contemporary instruments. Othen these performers refer to themselves as contemporary kobzars. Many contemporary blind bandurists can be placed into this catagory.uk:Бандурист
