[edit] Types
[edit] Barbed wire match
The phrase "barbed wire match" can encompass not only all variations listed below, but can also specifically mean a match where barbed wire, usually a spool, is simply considered a "legal weapon". Often the wire will be placed in or near the ring in an area where it is difficult to reach it (i.e. hanging above the ring, reachable by a ladder.)
[edit] Barbed wire ropes
A barbed wire rope match has the rings ropes, either on two or all four sides, being completley removed and barbed wire strung up in their place.
[edit] Caribbean barbed wire match
The Caribbean barbed wire match has the ropes "wrapped" in the barbed wire instead of being replaced altogether.
[edit] Circle of Fear
Circle of Fear is a generic term for any match where the mats covering the arena floor around the ring are removed and replaced with boards covered with barbed wire.
This match was (arguably) first used in the finals of the Big Japan Pro Wrestling (BJPW) Deathmatch tournament on May 4, 2001, when John Zandig versus Kintaro Kanemura was be fought with these stipulations.
[edit] Occurrences
In the United States of America, barbed wire matches are often associated with "Extreme" promotions like Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW). They are common occurrances in Japanese deathmatch promotions such as Frontier Martial Arts Wrestling (FMW).
Some state athletic commissions have banned the use of barbed wire in wrestling matches, making barbed wire matches a more rare occurrence in American wrestling in recent years. In the UK and Europe there had never been one until 1PW scheduled one on 14 October, 2006. which ended when Abyss jumped on Steve Corino twice whilst he was laying on a barbed wire board on rope of a table, the second jump resulted in Corino going through the table and Abyss winning the 1PW Heavyweight championship for a second time, almost a week later it is reported that Steve is still having back pains and medical attentionde:Barbed-Wire-Match
