Barthélemy Thimonnier, born on August 19 1793 in France, invented the first sewing machine that replicated sewing by hand. The patent for his machine was issued in 1830, but his factory was burnt down, reportedly by workers fearful of losing work following the issuing of the patent (which isn't sure yet). He died on July 5 1857.
