Bashkir State University is located in Ufa, Bashkortostan, Russia. It was founded in 1904 and based on former Pedagogical Institute of Ufa.

Bashkir State university is also known by its Russian acronym, BGU. This acronym is sometimes used to poke fun of the institution, because, it is said, it also stands for the Russian phrase, "budto gde-to uchilsya" - "apparently I may have gone to college somewhere".
