Battery may refer to:
[edit] Energy storage
- Battery (electricity), a device arraying electrolytic cells, or often used to mean one electrolytic cell
- See also, List of battery types
There is a theory that "battery" in this sense, came from Persian botry = "bottle". Long before in Persia or Babylonia an electric battery may have been made in a bottle with some chemicals; but it is unlikely that this was known to the Europeans who first made and used electric batteries. The first electricity-related usage was "cell" for what is now called `a battery', and "battery of cells" for a linked chain of such "cells"; there is an obvious analogy from a battery of artillery guns.

[edit] Etymology
"Battery" is derived from French batterie, from the verb French battre, Late Latin battuere = "to beat", of Germanic origin, compare Anglo-Saxon bēatan.
The meaning "organized set of" came from misunderstanding the reference in "artillery battery".
The meaning "power storage" came from misunderstanding the reference in "battery of electrolytic cells" shortened in common usage to "battery".
