Pope Benedict XIII, O.P. (Gravina in Puglia, February 2, 1649 – February 21, 1730), born Pietro Francesco Orsini, later Vincenzo Maria Orsini, was pope from 1724 to 1730. He succeeded Pope Innocent XIII (1721–24) in 1724.

His parents were named Ferdinando Orsini and Giovanna Frangipani of Tolpha.

At first, he called himself Benedict XIV (due to the superstition alleging that the number thirteen brings bad luck), but afterwards altered the title to Benedict XIII. He was a reforming Pope and endeavoured to put a stop to the decadent lifestyles of the Italian priesthood and of the cardinalate. He was a member of the great Orsini family of Rome, and the third and last member of that family to become Pope.

On February 21, 1931, Pope Pius XI opened the diocesan process of canonization for Benedict XIII, bestowing upon him the title "Servant of God".

Pope Benedict X is now considered an anti-pope. At the time however, this fact was not recognized and so the tenth true Pope Benedict took the official number XI. So the true twelth Pope Benedict took the official number XIII. This has advanced the numbering of all subsequent Popes Benedict by one. Popes Benedict XI-XVI are really the tenth through fifteenth popes by that name.)
