[edit] Biography
[edit] Prior to the crash
Boone is the chief operating officer of his mother's wedding business, a position that he assumed shortly after the death of his stepfather. Boone harbors a fondness for his stepsister Shannon, which develops into a romantic attraction. When Boone learns of Shannon’s financial difficulties after her father’s death he offers to give her money, but she does not accept ("Abandoned"). Boone rescues Shannon several times from abusive relationships by paying the boyfriends to leave her. One such rescue attempt leads Boone to Sydney, where he learns that the relationships are actually scams concocted by Shannon (who perceives and exploits his love for her) to get his money and attention. Boone is deeply hurt by the deception, but Shannon manages to seduce him into sleeping with her before they leave for the States ("Hearts and Minds").
In "Deus Ex Machina," Boone mentions that in his childhood he had a nanny named Theresa, upon whom he took out his frustrations at the absence of his mother. Theresa fell down a flight of stairs and broke her neck while responding to his summons when he was only six years old.
[edit] After the crash
After the crash, Boone joins the party trying to send a radio distress call (“Pilot: Part 2”). He attempts, unsuccessfully, to save a survivor named Joanna from drowning, and later, when bringing water to Claire, is accused of stealing from the camp water supply (“White Rabbit”). He helps with the digging when Jack is trapped in a cave-in (“The Moth”). Boone maintains a generally helpful attitude and remains protective of Shannon (although he criticizes her for her affectedness). His protective attitude combines with jealousy when she develops feelings for Sayid, and Boone unsuccessfully attempts to discourage the relationship.
Boone is drawn to the hunting and survival skills of Locke, a fellow castaway. He eventually becomes Locke’s protégé and begins to distance himself from the other survivors. Boone and Locke find a metal hatch while tracking the kidnapped Claire and Charlie (“All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues”). The two begin excavating the hatch, keeping its existence a secret from the other survivors. Locke subjects Boone to a hallucinatory exercise that allows Boone to resolve his feelings for Shannon ("Hearts and Minds"). In "Deus Ex Machina," Boone and Locke discover a heroin runner's Beechcraft stuck high in a tree canopy. Boone climbs up into the aircraft and finds a working radio in the cockpit, which he uses to transmit a Mayday signal. He receives a response to his message by a man, later revealed to be Bernard ("The Other 48 Days"), but the aircraft unbalances and falls nose-first to the ground. Boone sustains severe injuries and, despite Jack’s extensive attempts to treat him, dies in "Do No Harm." His last words are "Tell Shannon..." but he dies before he can finish the sentence.
Boone is buried in "The Greater Good". Sayid speaks at his funeral, but Shannon does not.
In "Further Instructions", Locke experiences a self-induced hallucination, where Boone appears and puts him in a wheelchair. He pushes Locke through an imaginary Sydney International Airport, where the other survivors are present but acting in different roles. Boone tells Locke that he has to help someone, but everyone that Locke recognizes is not the person. Boone vanishes and appears at the top of an escalator, and when Locke crawls up to the top, Boone appears bloody and injured, just like when he died. He says that Locke needs to clean up his own mess, and Locke awakens from the hallucination.
[edit] Trivia
- Boone frequently wears a t-shirt with Chinese characters meaning 84, which are two of the numbers that frequently appear throughout the show.
- Boone was originally planned to be referred to as "Five", and his name would have been Boone Carlyle the fifth. [citation needed]
- Even though he is dead, when he appears to Locke in the sweatlodge, his hair is longer, making him appear as he has aged.
- There is some confusion over the spelling of Boone's last name, Carlyle or Carlisle. It appears as the former on the official website, but Carlisle appears on the subtitles on the DVD of Hearts and Minds.
