Brampton Transit

Brampton Transit (BT) is public transport bus operator for the City of Brampton in the Regional Municipality of Peel, and within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). It began operation in 1974, and as the city continues to grow, so does Brampton Transit. In May 2005, a major upgrade occurred which put more routes into a grid pattern.

The transit system is currently headed by Transit Director Sue Bass.

[edit] Connections

Brampton Transit is connected with Mississauga Transit to the south, and routes along main corridors serve features in both cities, such as Sheridan College (Brampton Campus) , as well as industrial, commercial, and retail centres.

Steeles Avenue, once the boundary between the former Toronto and Chingacousy Townships, is now a major Brampton thoroughfare. The Route 11 now runs west of Shoppers World at Hurontario Street, and eastward into Toronto to Humber College's Main Campus. There is a transfer at the College with Route 50, that serves new developments in the Gore Road area near the former Highway 50, or Albion Road.

In addition, BT's route 77X (which is jointly operated with York Region Transit) runs along most of the former Highway 7 from Bramalea, and presently terminates in the east at the Finch subway station; there it connects with the TTC, York Region Transit, and GO Transit's bus service. During the autumn of 2005, York Region Transit's Viva bus rapid transit service began, but there has been no major change to this route, except for increased Sunday headways, from hourly to forty-five minutes.

Brampton Transit has also been a key carrier of commuters to and from the Georgetown Line. There are transfers to and from the trains and buses at the Bramalea, Brampton, and Mount Pleasant (opened February 2005) Stations, as well as direct connections to express buses at Bramalea City Centre and Trinity Common, and adjacent stop at Shoppers World.

As of January 30, 2006, cash fare is $2.50. Preschoolers and the blind travel for free.

The provincial Minister of Transportation has announced plans to introduce the GTA Farecard, a unified smartcard-based payment system for the entire Greater Toronto Area similar to the Octopus Card used in Hong Kong.

Brampton Transit operates out of several terminals in the city:

Bramalea Transit Centre — opened 1991, replacing a stop within the Bramalea City Centre, and has connections with GO Transit buses, and York Region Transit
Downtown Transit Terminal — opened 1991 and has connections with Brampton Train Station and GO buses
Shoppers World Terminal — opened 2001 and has connections with Mississauga Transit and GO Buses.
Trinity Common Terminal — opened 2000 and has connections with GO Transit buses
Sheridan College (Brampton Campus); connections with Mississauga Transit.

Brampton buses also service terminals outside the city including:

York Region Transit GO Finch Bus Terminal in Toronto, connecting to Finch Subway Station.
York Region Transit Promenade Mall Terminal in Thornhill (Vaughan).
Westwood Mall in Malton (Mississauga).
Humber College (North Campus) in Etobicoke.
