Breakcore

Breakcore is a loosely defined electronic music style that brings together elements of industrial, jungle, hardcore techno and IDM into a breakbeat-oriented sound that encourages speed, complexity, impact and maximum sonic density. Similar to punk, breakcore is maybe defined more by an attitude than by a musical formula.

The style began to emerge at the end of the late 90's. As hardcore techno artists were feeling a staleness in the Roland TR-909 and Roland TB-303 drum machine-based sounds, the commercial "childish" elements in Dutch gabber and the overall assaults of speedcore began to be adapted. Others felt an urge to take the ideas of early 1990s jungle music and acid techno one step further. It seems that most early breakcore came from London, Berlin and Newcastle, Australia (places which also saw the rise of speedcore). Soon after its initial growth some other influential places were Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Paris, Osaka & Winnipeg. Breakcore's means of distribution and marketing are the world wide web & the traditional route of self distribution during & after shows. It remains a relatively small genre, but compared to its size prior to the 90's web boom, it has grown substantially.

In the last couple of years with the breakcore sound spreading across the globe and easy access to sophisticated, easy to use software, what is and isn't breakcore is arguable. With so many influences from such varied places and genres, breakcore is a melting pot for different ideas & remains the worldwide musical proof that a generation gap still exists.
