In the jargon of eCommerce, brick and mortar businesses are companies that have a physical presence (for example, a building made of bricks and mortar) and offer face-to-face consumer experiences, as opposed to an Internet-only presence (see online shop for comparison). Most bricks and mortar companies have been in their specific field or service since before the dot-com boom of the 1990s. A famous example is the brick and mortar movie rental businesses and the competition from the new online rental services offered by Netflix.
A comparable term in the United Kingdom is High Street shops.
