Brown County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 6,950. Its county seat is Mount Sterling, Illinois6.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 796 km² (307 mi²). 792 km² (306 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it (0.52%) is water.

Brown County was formed out of Schuyler County in 1839. It is named in honor of Gen. Jacob Brown, who defeated the British at the Battle of Sackett's Harbor in 1813.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 6,950 people, 2,108 households, and 1,380 families residing in the county. The population density was 9/km² (23/mi²). There were 2,456 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 80.29% White, 18.20% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 3.93% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 2,108 households out of which 29.10% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.30% were married couples living together, 6.80% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.50% were non-families. 30.80% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.90% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the county the population was spread out with 17.80% under the age of 18, 12.60% from 18 to 24, 37.50% from 25 to 44, 19.40% from 45 to 64, and 12.70% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 174.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 194.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $35,445, and the median income for a family was $43,207. Males had a median income of $24,888 versus $20,558 for females. The per capita income for the county was $14,629. About 4.80% of families and 8.50% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.00% of those under age 18 and 10.00% of those age 65 or over.
All but 5 of the Black people reported by the Census as living in Brown County, Illinois are incarcerated in a state prison in the county. Almost 27.51% of the county's census population is incarcerated. If the Census Bureau had not counted prisoners as population, the county would be reported to be 98.65% White.
