Bushi

- For the beetle species A. bushi, see Agathidium.
Bushi (武士) is a term for the buke class in pre-industrial Japan. The bushi were combat personnel with priviliges associated with their honorable, but not noble, class. Bushido is derived from this term.
The Bushi were easily distinguished from the samurai since they did not follow a daimyo. In battle, the bushi were treated as enlisted men, following the orders of the officers (who were normally samurai).
