Cabo Delgado is the northernmost province of Mozambique. It has an area of 82,625 km² and a population of approximately 1.5 million (2002). Pemba is the capital of the province. As well as bordering the neighboring country of Tanzania, it touches fellow provinces Nampula and Niassa. On September 25, 1964, Frelimo solders, with help from the surrounding population, attacked an administrative post in the province. This raid marked the beginning of the armed struggle against the Portuguese colonial occupiers in Mozambique.
