Cantal is a département in south-central France.

Cantal was one of the original 83 départements created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from part of the former province of Auvergne.
[edit] Geography
The département is part of the current région of Auvergne and is surrounded by the départements of Puy-de-Dôme, Haute-Loire, Aveyron, Lot, Lozère, and Corrèze.
The principal towns are Aurillac, Saint-Flour, and Mauriac. Cantal is made of middle mountains (its highest point is Le Plomb du Cantal, 1858 m)

It often snows in the winter and it can be very hot during the summer period (especially on borders with Aveyron and Lot).

The inhabitants of the département are called Cantaliens.
Cantal is still one of the most isolated and unpopulated French département (with Lozère and Creuse).

The Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d'Auvergne features dormant volcanoes. Cantal also has numerous castles, waterfalls, lakes and rivers. The middle mountains of the Cantal allow alpine ski during the winter and mountain biking and canoeing when spring arrives.
