Canton is a city located in Van Zandt County, Texas, USA. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,292. It is the county seat of Van Zandt CountyGR6.

Canton is located at 32°33'13" North, 95°52'0" West (32.553576, -95.866710)GR1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.6 km² (5.6 mi²). 13.4 km² (5.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.80% water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2003, there are 3,292 people (as of today around 5,400), 1,296 households, and 848 families residing in the city. The population density is 244.9/km² (633.8/mi²). There are 1,486 housing units at an average density of 110.5/km² (286.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.14% White, 2.73% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 1.09% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 3.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,296 households out of which 27.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% are non-families. 31.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.87.
In the city the population is spread out with 21.4% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 25.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 86.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $32,098, and the median income for a family is $42,500. Males have a median income of $32,117 versus $20,598 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,351. 11.3% of the population and 7.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.6% of those under the age of 18 and 10.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The City of Canton is served by the Canton Independent School District.

Canton is the home of First Monday Trade Days, held on the Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday before the first Monday of every month. It claims to be the oldest and biggest flea market in the United States. It is also reported that, due to its success, that Canton does not impose a city property tax on its citizens (the county and school district, however, do impose such a tax).
Canton is also the home of the newly built Splash Kingdom Waterpark. This is the first waterpark built in East Texas.
