The carboxysome is a bacterial microcompartment made up of a protein shell that sequesters enzymes involved in carbon fixation reactions. Carboxysomes contain all the enzymes necessary for the Calvin cycle. They can also provide a pathway to convert bicarbonate to carbon dioxide in carbon dioxide poor environments. In cyanobacteria, some nitrifying bacteria, and thiobacilli; carboxysome are inclusion bodies that contain ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase,(carbon dioxide fixation enzyme).
