Cardinal is a vivid red, which gets its name from the cassocks worn by Catholic cardinals. The family of birds takes its name from the color.

Other school colors described as cardinal include those of The University of Arkansas, Brown University, Fairfield University, Iowa State University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stevens Institute of Technology, the University of Southern California, Wesleyan University, Willamette University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
