Cartoon Network TOO is a new spin off television channel aimed at 4-16 year olds, that airs a mixture of original and modern classic cartoons from the Cartoon Cartoons umbrella of programming, everyday at 11pm on Cartoon Network and also airs archived cartoons. It launched in the UK and Ireland on April 24 2006, on Sky Digital channel 622. The channel broadcasts between 3am-7pm daily. Cartoon Network TOO's format is similar to POP, which also shows archived children's television programming. The channel timeshares with TCM 2, another UK-only spin-off channel.

[edit] History

The channel launched late at around 10.15am with Dexter's Laboratory and was followed by Cow and Chicken at 10.30am. Then Wacky Races at 11am.

On July 27th 2006, CN Too, along with Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Toonami, Boomerang +1 and TCM, were suffered a major technical fault due to a power cut in Soho, London. This was due to the energy supplier EDF cutting power from different parts of Soho one at a time for four hours, purposely, due to the inability to meet energy demands in the wake of a heat wave. The power cut caused a mix up of channels (i.e. Cartoon Network being broadcast on Boomerang and Toonami, with Boomerang being broadcast on CN Too). Boomerang +1 was off air for some time, while TCM, reverted between TCM France and other programming during the times it was able to provide a service. Most advertising was suspended and several of the channel websites were offline also. Those who could still receive the channels had a backup transmission played out, making people curious into why the incorrect programmes were played out when compared to the EPG CN Too and Boomerang were showing episodes of The Flintstones. These backups where played out with a scrolling message which said "We apologise for the disruption to this service. This is due to technical difficulties. We will resume normal programming as soon as possible" in multiple languages. Whilst most channels returned to the air relatively quickly, it took longer for CN Too to resume programming and Toonami viewers, many of whom have made note of their disdain for the direction in which Turner took the Brand in the UK, joked that the backup transmission was better than the regular one, purely on the basis that no live action aired during the black out.

[edit] Boomerang in United States Of America?

Some Americans believe that Boomerang in United States Of America is fastly becoming Cartoon Network TOO in United States Of America. It has recently been showing shows like Dexter's Laboratory and Mike, Lu & Og. [citation needed]

[edit] Longer timings?

Some people are starting to think with a lot of new shows coming soon they will add another 2 hours onto the channel. So it will stop airing at 21:00 and TCM 2 will broadcast at 21:00 - 03:00. This would be similar to how Cartoon Network expanded it's hours from a 7pm closedown to a 9pm closedown before eventually going 24 hours. [citation needed]

[edit] Newer Shows

Cartoon Network are thinking of putting in some newer shows, like Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi & The Life and Times of Juniper Lee in a new block that will air CN, Toonami and Boomerang shows.

[edit] Criticism

Some people think that the addition of Cartoonito was a bad idea as they cannot see Hanna-Barbera cartoons anymore, instead, they have to get up at 3:00am-6:00am to see classics. Other people think that CN Too should be placed between Cartoon Network, Toonami and Boomerang, so more people get the chance to see it, as some people might not scroll right to the bottom of the channel list. The CN Too microsite says that Yogi Bear will be showing soon, however, that might be cancelled due to the addition of "Cartoonito".

[edit] Trivia

  • Nick Jr. 2, which was also a non-timeshift extension of its main channel, launched the same day as Cartoon Network TOO.
