Communism, or the theory of communism has both a religious and secular interpretation, with the religious interpretation having historically appeared before the secular version. The term "Communism" is most often used to describe revolutionary philosophies based on the theories espoused by Karl Marx and as a synonym for the Marxist-Leninist system practiced in Soviet Russia under Lenin and his successors (see Marxism). On the other hand, non-Marxist forms of communism also exist, for example Christian communism.
