Image:Jan van Eyck 001.jpg This is a category for painters from the County of Flanders and, more generally, the Low Countries, the leading region in North-European painting during the late gothic and renaissance period. The painters are also classified as Netherlandish or Dutch. This is a separate category to avoid confusion with Dutch painting (more prominent after 1600) and Belgian painting (after 1830).

There are few or no prominent Flemish painters who were active later than approx. 1650. From the late 15th century, most painters from the region (ex. Frans Hals) fled the religious oppression during the Eighty Years' War and went to the Northern Netherlands, who were experiencing their Golden Age. However, every painter from this region who worked before 1830 can be put in this category.

Many painters in this category were not born in the County of Flanders but went there during their life because the wealthy Flemish cities attracted many artists from the neighbouring countries.

When you add someone to this list, please also add him to the List of Flemish painters.
