Throughout Chinese history, but especially between the mid-19th century and 1949, as well as the 17th century, Christian missionaries, predominantly Westerners, have worked in China in an attempt to spread the Christian religion in its various forms. Their role has not been uncontroversial. Several have been celebrated within their respective denominations. They have been made the subject of literature and the arts. With the rise of the People's Republic of China in 1949, as well as the significant changes in global culture that developed in the post-World War II era, missionaries have had a much smaller impact during the contemporary period. In the early period, Catholic Jesuit missionaries had a well-known impact on China's culture and learning, especially in terms of mathematics, science, geography, and other fields. Missionaries' impact on the linguistic study of the various forms of the Chinese language have also been significant.
