Denmark is divided into 270 municipalities (Danish, kommuner) and 13 counties (amter).
As of January 1, 2007 under the Danish Kommunalreformen ("The Municipal Reform" of 2007) a number of smaller municipalities will be united into larger units. This will decrease the number of municipalities from 270 to 98. In addition the counties will be replaced by five larger Regions. The new larger municipalities which are completely new entities (that is, their names did not exist before the reform), are listed for now in the subcategory - Future municipalities of Denmark.
